Don't use splash screens, they're just a sign that your developers are lazy and not willing to put efforts in making your app start quickly (I touched on that in my cold start remark). If I were in charge (pun!), I'd ask for specific numbers from the developers to confirm that impression. As others have pointed out, the battery consumption is pretty high. It's the only reason I can think of why it's so painful to change between characters or fetch a simple list. When I switch characters in the app I think it's sending Blizzard a logout command as if I were in game, then a login for the next one. We already know it literally logs you into the game (booting you if you try to play and App at the same time). Since we're armchair developing here, I think the answer is that they are mimicking the calls they already have for the game. 2 seconds to see that their mission isn't quite done yet and I can look somewhere else - taking 10 more seconds to change. How goddamn hard is it to fetch all of the data during initialization or in the background while I'm looking at my first character? Why does it not seem to cache my character list and only communicate for updates? There can't possibly be that much data to transfer but it does it all the goddamn time.So changing to a character that's not listed involves clicking "Character List" which then takes 5 seconds to load, then another 5 seconds after I choose the character to interact with. But the character changer on the main World Quests map only shows 3 at a time. I have 4 level 110 characters and 3 more that have unlocked missions. Is it really important for the green "cracked earth" background to pulse on the login screen? Do I need the character class icons to take up that much room? Choosing an item for follower equipment? Gotta hit the back button. ![]() Clicking on a mission reward? Tap outside the box and you're good. On a mission screen you click the big red X. Equipment slots? An empty box with no indication you can use it. Collect minions/equipment? Click on the green glowing icon labeled "Collect". ![]() Login or change characters? Big red and gold buttons. You can upgrade your follower iLvl by clicking on the iLvL in the expanded Follower view, but it's a tiny green icon at the top of the screen next to the displayed iLvL. Inconsistent indications on what you can interact with and what you can't.I'm not the OP but I do work in software and among my major complaints are: It's surprising that Blizzard seems to have such a high quality standard for its games but doesn't seem to care much about its mobile apps. Either they are logged in (show "Characters" and not "Login") or they're not (show "Login" and not "Characters"). The app obviously don't handle onResume() correctly since every time I foreground it, I'm told it couldn't connect (which is oftentimes a lie, as this thread showed).ĭon't show the user both "Login" and "Characters" on the same screen. You can always display some content the user can interact in that timeline even if you're doing some stuff in the background. There is no excuse to go above this (very generous already) limit. At my company, I require all our apps to cold start in less than 1.5 seconds. Takes multiple seconds to login or even to start.
